Am I A Candidate

NJ Bariatric Institute can determine if you are an ideal candidate for weight loss surgery, by reviewing several factors.

Your BMI and if you have any obesity health related conditions is step one. A candidate for weight loss surgery (gastric bypass, gastric sleeve or gastric band) will have the following BMI:

  • A BMI (Body Mass Index) of 40 or more.
  • BMI between 35 and 40 with a severe health related condition, such as high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes.

The New Jersey Bariatric Institute follows the currently accepted guidelines for patient eligibility for surgery. The Body Mass Index Calculation determines whether an individual is at a normal or abnormal weight. It applies to both men and women.

When calculating your BMI you may see terms such as Morbid Obesity or Severely Obese. These medical terms are related to individuals with overweight issues. The only treatment which has been shown to be effective in bringing the weight and the health related issues into line is surgery.

Other factors are involved in making this life changing decision, such as:

Are You Dedicated to a lifestyle change?
Have you tried other medical weight loss programs with no success?
What type of support system can you count on?

Additional factors to consider are:

  • Your age, patients should be between 15 and 69 years of age.
  • Your psychological condition
  • Must be free of drug or alcohol use
  • To undergo surgery, you need to be medically stable
