Dr. Nicholas A Bertha is a New Jersey native. He was born and raised in Morris County. He is the namesake grandson of “the famous Dr. Bertha” who was a long practicing surgeon in his hometown. Dr Bertha played three sports and graduated from Randolph High School. He went on to Bucknell University where he received a Degree in Biology. He returned home afterward and attended the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey School of Osteopathic Medicine (UMDNJ-SOM). At that time, the school had a split campus and the first two years were spent in New Brunswick with the NJ Medical School students at Rutgers. The last two years were located in Stratford, Camden County. He remained at UMDNJ-SOM for a Post Graduate year as a Rotating Osteopathic Intern and then returned back north to Morristown Memorial Hospital for his surgical residency.
After residency he joined a busy general surgical practice in Morristown. His interest and expertise in Laparoscopic surgery then led him to begin performing Bariatric surgery. At that time, very few surgeons had the capability of performing procedures of that complexity. During his next 14 years performing and improving the procedures, he has been fortunate enough to be involved in many landmark projects. He was involved in the original FDA trial for the United States evaluation of the “LAP-BAND” in 2001. He has also participated in evaluations of stomach implanted pacemaker devices, implantable gastric balloons and many cutting edge new surgical instruments. He participated in the Low BMI trial with the Lap Band which led to the FDA decision to recommend use of the band in the BMI category of 30-35. He has been involved with the Morris County Medical Society executive board, and was a founding member to the New Jersey Chapter of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. Dr. Bertha has been a presenting physician at national surgical meetings, and an active participant in surgical clinical research trials.
